Rocket League Basic Rotation and Positioning Guide For Defending

1/26/2018 11:45:53 AM

In Rocket League we can find different types of tactics and rotations. Today we are going to explain a little the basic rotations in defense, although it is not always good to rotate depending on the circumstances.

We have to bear in mind that Rocket League is a game in which the situations in a match can vary a lot, having to react in one way or another. This guide is only indicative, to follow in cases where it can be effective.

How do we know, it is good to follow a rotation. Why? Because it helps us cover gaps, to only go one for the ball and also to go faster to it.

We have taken several pictures of matches and we have marked the cars of the defending team in order to explain the situations. The cars will be called:

Car A

Car-A-150x150

Car B

Car-B-150x150

Car C

Car-C-150x150

Positioning in goal

Rocket League Rotation - 1

How we see in the image 1, is a play in which the blue team is attacking the orange team by the left band. The car "A" (in goal) is ready to go to the ball, the car "B" (closer in the picture) is prepared to cover the goal after the departure of the car "A" and the car "C" low to help the car "B" if needed.

The first exit

Rocket League Rotation - 2

After the car "A" comes out and clears the ball, we see how the cars "B" and "C" are positioned in goal and wait for the opponent's touch to go.

Go to the counter or rotate defense again

Rocket League Rotation - 3

In this picture we see that the car "A" has cleared the ball, but a car of the other team has cut and the ball is still a danger in the orange field. Still the car "A" is positioned offering option to pass and it depends on whether the car "B" wins the ball and gives the pass. In addition we see how the car "C" covers goal for any complication. If for whatever reason the car "B" failed to win the ball it would have to prepare for the possible pass, the car "C" would go to the ball and the car "A" would have to go down to the goal (in a very similar by positioning to that of image 1).

Do not bother your classmates

Rocket League Rotation - 4

When we have to go down to cover goal because there is nobody in it and a teammate is going to go for the ball, we always have to go down the side that lowers the car "B" so as not to disturb the car "A" and be able to place you good in goal.

Do not bother your colleagues v2

Accompanying in attack

There are times that we can not avoid going down the other way, if we do that, we can do as the car "B", climb the wall and try not to disturb the car "A" while going to clear the ball and the car "C" covers the goal.

Rocket League Rotation - 6

The car "A" (on the wall in the background) takes it out and as nobody comes, the car "C" (left) goes ahead and accompanies the car "A" while the car "B" is going to take care of cover goal.

But watching a possible against

Rocket League Rotation - 7

As we saw in Image 3 we talked about positioning to receive the pass while the next one out tried to give it to him. In this picture we see how the car "B" is ahead waiting for the pass and the car "A" passes the ball, but we see how the car "C" is a little behind in case the thing goes wrong or intercepted by the rival .

Attentive to a possible cut and subsequent pass

Rocket League Rotation - 8

Here we see another similar move, but not the same. The car "C" comes from above, but sees that the car "A" can pass it, then turns and prepares to receive the pass while the car "B" saves the position back. That's why sometimes it's better not to rotate exactly, if you see that your partner can give you a good pass and clear it is a good option to get the ball.

Clear example of what NOT TO DO

And finally I will give an example of why it is good to rotate, let's look at the following images.

Rocket League Rotation - 9

One consequence of not rotating is to go two to a ball, in this picture we see how the car "C" jumps to a ball from a well-positioned goal and the car "B" tries to go from the wall. A failure like that is really dangerous and most of the time it ends in a goal against.

If we have a teammate who is well positioned in goal, he should always go because he will get better, and the one that comes from behind will cover the goal and go to the next ball, following a good defensive rotation.

With this we end the basic explanation of rotation in defense, if you see that you score many goals or that in defense you always go two for the ball do not hesitate to try it and you will see how to improve your defense.
